I’m currently exploring IntelliCAD and I’ve read that it is quite compatible with DWG and DXF file formats. However, I’m curious about how this works out in real practice. When opening, editing, and saving files, does IntelliCAD maintain the same level of accuracy and detail as AutoCAD? Are there any common issues like font problems, missing lines, or discrepancies when exchanging files between the two platforms?

If anyone here has real-world experience using IntelliCAD (in architecture, engineering, or design work), I’d love to hear your thoughts and insights.

My experience has been in engineering.
I worked in the Oil & Gas industry, producing 3D models (from old paper drawings) of Gas Platforms in the North Sea which I imported into a software package to analyse the coverage provided by the installed F&G detectors.
Example from the software package, only modelled down to 4"/100mm pipework:- I never had any issues with the dwg compatibility.
The clients provided modifications in dwg & dgn formats which I was able to import into my models, again without compatibility issues

I have also provided dxf files to sheet metal fabricators without issue, once we have established which versions they could use.

Hey, just another member here who’s bounced between AutoCAD and a couple of IntelliCAD-based programs.

In day-to-day use, DWG/DXF compatibility is generally solid, especially for standard 2D drafting. Opening, editing, and saving between the two is usually smooth, but there are a few recurring quirks you should be aware of:

• Accuracy and geometry
Lines, polylines, hatches, dims — all the core stuff stays accurate. I’ve never seen IntelliCAD “shift” geometry or mess with coordinates. For architectural floor plans and engineering schematics, the fidelity is basically identical.

• Fonts / SHX issues
This is the most common hiccup.
If the original file uses custom SHX fonts or unusual text styles, IntelliCAD might substitute a default font. Not a deal-breaker, but you’ll notice labels shifting slightly. TrueType fonts are almost always fine.
