Hi,
I have a question about setting up dimension styles.

We use Architectural dimensions in model space.

My way of thinking is to first set up all of our dimension variables (the same for all styles). For example we use 0.1 for text (so set text to 0.1). Then change the dimscale for each dimension. For example the dimscale for 1/8" dimension would be 96, and for 1/2" dimension would be 24, etc.
We would set up something like: arch_24 (for 1/2"), arch_48 (for 1/4"), and arch_96 (for 1/8").
So all of our dimension variables would be the same with the dimscale being different.

Now my co-worker says that I am wrong.
He says the dimscale should always be set to 1 and that each variable should be set to the actual value. For example a 1/8" dimension style would have the text set to 9.6 (which is 0.1 X 96) and so forth.

Am I missing something here?

That's all I do - change only the dimscale for each different style... and the Linear Dimensioning scale factor for those occasional scaled details when it's the easiest way.
Apart from the complication of changing all the defaults, I have a lot less trouble with dims when read on other software and even in different versions of Icad.

That's what dimscale is there for, so you don't have to change each variable. Doing architectural work, having a dimstyle for each scale is practicle. I do mechanical. I have five different dimstyles and may well use them all on a single drawing. Also, scales vary widely. If I had five dimstyles for each scale, I would end up with more dimstyles than layers. I use the five and change dimscale according to the need.
